Praxis of Social Imaginaries, Winter Session 2023

Location: Domus Theologica at the University of in Oslo, Norway

The Praxis of Social Imaginaries. Cosmologies: Othering and Liminality (Circle 3) had its initial meeting during the Winter Session of the Nordic Summer University (NSU) in March 2023.

The writings of Gerald of Wales were the focus of the retreat sessions. The travel accounts consist of reports prepared by Wales for the King of England. In addition, the accounts were also shared with Wales’s colleagues. These accounts were written in the later part of the 12th century by Wales. a Monk, as he travelled throughout Ireland seemed to come alive as the participating researchers, artists, and activists of the NSU Circle 3 engaged in a cosmological artistic intervention through the practice of walking, dancing, listening, and discussions all while creating alternative learning environments for gaining knowledge that shifts awareness.

Circle 3 is initiated by theologian and dancer Dr. Laura Hellsten and performance historian Dr. Lindsey Drury within the Nordic Summer University (NSU).

The retreat’s closing exercise was facilitated by Helena Hildur W which included but not limited to:

  • Helena’s ad hoc mapping on a classroom blackboard–picturing our experiences as a group, reading Gerald of Wales’s tales, and listening to Viveca Servatius’ lecture on Hildegard of Bingen.

The retreat sessions took place in Domus Theological, the Theological Library at University of Oslo, Norway.
