Last night I was able to attend the exquisite Magic Flute performance of the Åland Opera at Kastelholms Castle. It was quite remarkable to realise that this childhood place of wonder had its historical “peak” during the exact same period as Olaus Magnus was working to describe and create maps of the North to his fellows in Rome. And now my research project Åbo Akademi University is about to embark on this new adventure exploring these texts and artworks in our transdisciplinary collaboration with Centre for Sustainable Ocean Science (SOS) and the Skärgårdshavets Biosfärområde for the years 2025-2026.

We are particularly happy to be able to announce that Nordisk Kulturfond has granted our collaboration with artists and cultural workers in the Nordic and Baltic region, together with indigenous scholars from India and our great team member from the Amazon region in Peru, Robertho Paredes an OPstart funding grant!

With the help of this, me and Eduardo Abrantes will be able to prepare events for the theme year on folklore and traditional knowledge practices. I am so happy and really looking forward to what this will build for finding new approaches to sustainability questions.
